Top 5 Ways to Keep Teeth Straight After Braces: A Mom’s Guide

blog-title-5-ways-to-keep-teeth-straight

Everyone who wears braces knows it takes extra care and patience to reach a beautiful result and get those braces off. Then, the minimal effort to keep the teeth straight after braces protects the investment in a great smile to help it last a lifetime.

Here are the top 5 points to remember:

1) Start with expert care. Work with a university trained orthodontic specialist, who knows the details of providing a longest-lasting result.

2) Avoid quick fixes. If treatment has a brief time limit there may not be time to provide the procedures that help your teeth stay straight.

3) Avoid partial corrections. These can allow teeth to shift easily after treatment. If considering clear aligners, be sure to ask your orthodontist what compromises in stability of the teeth might undermine the long-term result, and be ready to deal with these.

4) Use stability techniques. Expert orthodontic care with a specialist can use a variety of extra procedures to help keep teeth straight. This involves special hidden shaping of teeth, select extra correction, and certain gum procedures to name a few.

5) Stay committed to your retainers! Follow all your orthodontist’s recommendations for retainers and how to properly use them. The wide variety of fixed and removable retainers has to be carefully considered and used just as instructed by your orthodontic specialist.

Follow these guidelines for your orthodontic care and you’ll enjoy your healthy, bright beautiful smile for your entire lifetime! That’s something to really smile about! Orthodontics Guide For Moms: What is the best age for braces?

New braces 101 image

I often get the question: “What is the best age for braces?” To answer it, here are some general guidelines when trying to decide when you should consult an orthodontist about straightening your kiddos’ pearly whites:

The average age to wear braces is about 12 years old. However, this does not necessarily mean that your child will get braces right away. It simply means that after a consult, I will be able to identify any problems that may exist and determine the best time to start any needed treatment. Orthodontic problems vary, depending on tooth position, jaw growth, or a combination. Each of the many problems that can be present affects the best time to start braces– some as early as age 7 or 8, and others as late as 18 or 19!

To help you identify when it’s time to see an orthodontist for a consult, here are 3 signs to look for:

  • Over-jet, Crowding and Spacing: Front teeth that stick out too much (overjet), are crowded, or are spaced.
  • Overbite: Bites where the lower front teeth are near or biting the roof of the mouth.
  • Crossbite: Trickier to see, but very important, bites where any upper teeth hit behind or inside the lower teeth. This is known as crossbite, which can harm the teeth and cause the lower jaw to grow to one side.

Additionally, here are 2 tips for timing of braces:

1) Start braces early enough so the alignment or bite problem doesn’t become more complicated to treat. Let’s not let a problem worsen so that getting a great result might not happen.

2) Delay treatment until the braces can be on the shortest period of time and still get a complete and beautiful result.

By timing braces correctly, the patient gets the best result the easiest way. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first orthodontic consult at age 7, when the first set of permanent molars are in and the new incisors are showing up. Then, we follow young patients every 6-12 months to make sure the new teeth come in properly and to time the braces for the very best and easiest result.

Moms come to us as orthodontic experts to evaluate these features and many other ones harder to see to be sure braces treatment starts on time. This ensures that their youngsters wind up with a beautiful smile for a lifetime, and get it the easiest, most cost-effective way possible. With an early orthodontic evaluation, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, straight, glowing smile. Feel free to ask me more about the best age for braces for your child. Thanks for taking such great care of your kids!

Let’s talk about the cost of braces..

K_affordingbraces_big

Many folks these days enjoy the benefits of braces- a beautiful, healthy smile for a lifetime. Here at Raleigh Orthodontics, it’s our mission to provide you with affordable, personalized and highly experienced specialty orthodontic care that fits your budget!

We offer a variety of payment options to meet your financial needs.

The Cost of Braces

Let’s start with the typical fee, say $5635, for full braces lasting about 18 to 24 months. This fee will include all the planning needed at the beginning, all the braces and adjustments, plus retainers when the braces come off. You may elect to pay a typical initial payment of 15% to 25 %, then spread the remaining amount over 18 months. We are very flexible in how payments are structured so we allow initial payments as low as 5% to 10% as well. We will help you fit the fee into your budget so you can get the care you need for your child or yourself. If paying the whole fee at the beginning we apply a 5% fee reduction for simplifying our bookkeeping.

Insurance Coverage for Braces

We participate In-Network with the following insurance companies:
MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Sheild, Ameritas, Cigna, Humana, United Concordia and The Guardian.

Here at Raleigh Orthodontics we are very experienced working with these and many other insurance companies. This means we’ll file for your insurance coverage and apply the expected coverage amount to the fee, reducing the costs to you. Keep your coverage active during the whole time of treatment to take advantage of this benefit. We will determine the level of your coverage and explain it to you at your first visit.

Affordable Braces

We pay special attention to features of care that keep costs down. In addition to using your insurance coverage for braces, we use advanced materials and techniqus to keep the care visits to a minimum while still keeping highest quality care our main goal.

In the end, the benefits of our personalized, highly experienced specialty orthodontic care outweigh the costs. You can expect to have teeth that are easier to keep clean, won’t wear down because of a poor bite, and that allow a big, bright beautiful smile that boosts confidence and makes smiling a joy.

If you have any questions about financing or payments, ask us! We’ll thoroughly explain your choices and make sure we accommodate your needs. Give us a call at 919-847-6364 and visit us at RaleighOrthodotics.com. See you soon!
